"Everyone has made Axl out to be this crazy person...But having been
in a band with these guys for five and a half years, I'm not so sure
that it was all Axl's fault."

Halloween 1999...man, was that a show! Peabody's Monster played
that year at the Alaskan Hotel. Led by the late great Bill
Kozlowski, (co-founder of Rock Alaska Records, which still
has its home at 154 Franklin St. Downtown), Simon Taylor on
Bass, Ryan Stanley on Guitar, Josh Lovette on Drums and Doug
Fanyak on alternate percussion, the venue was packed. Unknown
to us at the time we were starting a Rock Alaska Records tradition
that would spawn 7 years of rockin' Juneau's downtown scene
in the Fall.
1999 was my first year living in Juneau. I was sound man for
the show, and found myself in awe at the throng of bar patrons
brightly disguised in imaginitive and intricate costumes,
their collective interests: drinking and dancing the night
away until the wee hours of the night. |
 |
 |
With daylight savings kicking in at midnight and giving us
an extra hour of festivities, this only added to our rollicking
good time.
Our lame prize for best costume back in 1999, was an autographed
bowling ball Bill bought at Salvation Army. Our costume contest
prizes have gone up a notch or three since then. The year
we autographed and gave away Bill's old guitar, the bar was
forever raised to |
give
away better prizes every year. Last year we gave away a brand
new Fender guitar donated by Odem Distributors. The contest
winner is based on crowd response and we have no intentions
of letting our fans down this year.
Now seven years later its become a tradition for RAR to play
a big show with 2-3 acts somewhere downtown...just follow
your ears. Each year we try to get as many musicians working
up at Peabody's Monster Studios in the act as possible. Such
names as Peabody's Monster, Contra Public, Brown Haven,
Zuya Chante, Daralict and Old Goat |

have raged the stage for the event and the patrons just
keep coming back for more. For me, Rock Music and Halloween
go together like Vodka and Tonic. Spacey Guitar Jams and Rock
Anthems set a great mood for the Witches, Monsters and Ghouls
that come out of Juneau's woodwork.
This years Halloween show marks RAR's 7th annual event, taking
place at the Rendezvous on Saturday October 28th at 9pm. We
always play the Friday before just to get things ready for
the multi-band show. Costume contest starts around Midnight
on Saturday. |
Brown Haven, featuring Darin Jensen on Guitar and Vocals,
Damien Horvath on Bass and Vocals and Alex Romero (thats me)
on Drums and Vocals, will be headlining the show this year.
As usual, Brown Haven will be performing new original material
never before played live.
Opening acts this year include, Showcase Showdown,
a 5 piece act to recently emerge from the ashes of other RAR
projects. Members include: Caleb Wylie and Doug Fanyak of
Zuya Chante, Dave Pichard of Satan's Taint,
and two newcomers Scott Crass (from Fairbanks) playing bass,
and Nikki Skeek leading the boys with her amazing vocals.
We've enjoyed seeing this band emerge over the past couple
of months and we know they will bring a lot to our show this
year. |
 |
All that said,
get your best costume on, and join us at the Rendezvous for the Rock show of the year for us. We promise not to disappoint.
